received_9314836278627005 - Jonathan Kirsch.jpeg

A performance veteran of more than two decades, Jon has made a spectacle of himself from the halls of legislature to the soundscapes of musical theatre, city street corners to stage plays, and from auction blocks to the shooting galleries of stand-up comedy. An eternal improviser known for his fearlessness, his musical style, and his eclecticism Jon can be seen most regularly in the trenches of both long and short form improv performance in the local comedy scene. He is a believer in the arts in education - and society as a whole - and of equal access and equal rights; his long-theorized belief of comedians as unlicensed philosophers echoes the sentiment of artists using lies to tell the truth.
When he's not doing PERFORMANCES™ he's doing his kids' laundry at home or being an absolute chaos goblin at a D&D table.

DEAD (UN)SERIOUS

Jon

KIRSCH

It's not about punchlines, it's not about time, and it's sure not about a third thing, comedy is about everything. That's why it's tragedy + time = comedy because everything's funny, even when it ain't!

This is the workshop that knows that the biggest most heart-wrenching moments of drama are balanced by gut-busting comedy and that the only thing more devastating than the tears of sadness are the peals of laughter before them.
In the first half, you'll be examining the pillars of what makes funny funny and how to do comedy - things like absurdism and when turkeys are stupid robots, how to Socrates nuts, and the art of interrupti- And in the second half it's all about implementing humour and comedy as the upside-down frown reflection of tragedy and how making them work together is the hybrid powerhouse. If you can make your crowd laugh, you can not only make a human connection with your characters, but you can sucker-punch the audience with literally any other emotion.

On completion, you'll have a better grasp of what the point of comedy in theatre is, how to integrate it into your projects, and how to use it for good or evil. Remember, clowns can be funny, sad, or terrifying, and it's all in how you make them!

Select theatre credits include Footloose the Musical (Wendy Jo), Shrek the Musical (Fiona), You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Lucy), Murder's in the Heir (Co-Director), I Don't Want to Talk About it (Director).

IMPROV WITH INTENTION

Kevin

WOOD

Creation and performance are a balance of impulse and intention. When artists understand both, their work resonates more genuinely with an audience.
